Qualifying for race 2 followed shortly after qualifying for race 1, so the track was still damp, but drying. Crook would take no part as he was still changing his engine for Trevor's spare one, and Davies only managed one lap before pulling up, leaving him 13th on the grid, just ahead of Paterson, who was not having the most enjoyable of weekends driving the Racehire.com car. Up at the sharp end it was Hopkins and Fritchley again, but this time with Sammie on pole. Hollis was 3rd again but this time it was Matthew, not Richard. Graham was 4th, followed by Simon Clarke (replacing Wayne Cowling), Robinson and new club chairman Steve Panas (replacing Ainslie Bousfield).
Just as before, Hopkins led away at the start, chased by Fritchley, Hollis and Panas. Graham managed one lap before his engine cried enough, but at least he managed to get further than Jacques, who topped off a miserable weekend by not even making the start! In another case of deja vu, Hopkins was caught and passed by Fritchley, and when he briefly missed a gear going on to the start/finish straight, he waved goodbye to 2nd, as Hollis, Panas, Robinson and Clarke all got through! Further back, Storey, R Hollis and Williams were having their own battle, followed by Crook, Paterson and... no-one else! Clearly this was a race of attrition, as joining Jacques and Graham in retirement were Martin Fox on lap 3, and Lien Davies on lap 4!
With half the race gone there were still 6 cars in with a chance of the lead. Fritchley had led for much of the way, but on lap 7 Hollis got past, obviously hoping to repeat the circumstances of race 1. However. it was not to be this time, as on lap 9 Fritchley, Robinson and Clarke all passed him down the back straight. It looked as though it would be a Tete Rouge 1-2, but Robinson's efforts to push Fritchley along allowed Clarke and Hollis to re-pass. Panas and Hopkins were still in touch so it was anybody's race! Clarke momentarily led on the penultimate lap, but Fritchley and Hollis both managed to slipstream past, and when on the last lap Hollis scrabbled his way past into the lead, to deny Sammie a victory for the second time that weekend. This time the gap was even closer - just 0.114 seconds! Clarke held on to 3rd ahead of Robinson, Panas and Hopkins. Williams came out on top of the fight for 7th, just beating R Hollis and Storey. Last of the runners was Simon Crook in 10th, after Mark Paterson pulled off the circuit with 8 minutes remaining.
So which was better, Solex or Weber? At Cadwell at least, there wasn't much difference. What will Mallory have in store?
