2010 round 7 - Croft PDF Print E-mail

The 2CV racers hadn't been to Croft since 2005, so for many it was a new experience. The track itself is predominantly a power circuit like Snetterton, but with the twisty first and last sections to catch out the unwary. The length of the paddock could also catch out the unwary if you didn't allow enough time for a toilet break (although the clever ones had remembered to bring bikes)! Unlike the previous rounds, this was a 2 day meeting, which meant that conditions could easily change between the qualifying and races, and that there would be the chance to have a long lie in on Sunday morning!

After their dominant performance at Oulton, it was hard to see anyone beating the Gadget cars, but after first qualifying it was obvious that the gap wasn't actually that big. Wayne Cowling was once again on pole, but by only half a second from Anthony Robinson. Steve Panas and Sammie Fritchley made up row 2, whilst Cadwell pole-sitter Lewis Hopkins returned in in 5th. Andy Smith put in an appearance in Richard Hollis' car, but was shocked To find himself down in 14th and last - for reasons that would not become apparent until Sunday morning!

The session also featured two cars that were doing their utmost to upset the other drivers (albeit unintentionally)! Steve Jaques was doing an excellent impression of a steam engine, as an incorrectly fitted oil filler cap (incorrectly fitted as in not closed) allowed the engine's oil to come pouring out. It was apparent to all around him as the front of his car became more and more oil-stained, but Steve was blissfully unaware until the oil light came on and he entered the pitlane. The startline marshal was showing the black and orange flag, but to Lien Davies not Steve Jaques. Unfortunately for Lien, he thought it was for Steve, so he ploughed on completely oblivious to the fuel pouring out on the left-handers! Eventually he stopped, but only because he ran out of fuel. Cue a ticking off from the clerk of the course!

All the cars were present and correct however for the start of the race, including Jaques who had managed to get his other engine repaired, which had also been leaking oil on the previous day in testing. With two cars up near the front, the Gadget boys of Cowling and Panas were looking to get ahead of the rest and pull away, which they duly did, although the rest of the field were still within touching distance should a of inter-team rivalry occur. Robinson was holding 3rd, ahead of Fritchley, Nick Paton and Hopkins. Alec Graham and Mick Storey were duelling for 7th, ahead of a 4 car group of Michael Fox, Matthew Hollis (whose early season speed had deserted him), Smith and Jaques. Lien Davies and Peter Rundle were having their own tussle for the final place, Davies another driver who was struggling for pace at this track, and Rundle who was struggling to move efficiently, having unknowingly left the handbrake on!

By half distance, Paton had got past Robinson for 3rd, and Hopkins was suddenly 4 seconds a lap slower as his brakes faded, dropping him back towards Graham and Storey. Fox and Hollis were still battling, but Smith had half spun down to 12th on lap 9. With just a few minutes to go, Robinson went off and retired after his steering sheared - not ideal when trying to get round corners - costing him any chance of the podium. Fritchley wasn't giving up though, and she briefly got back past Paton, before Nick re-passed her to take 3rd on the line, behind the comfortable 1-2 of Cowling and Panas. Hopkins just managed to keep enough speed to finish ahead of Graham, whilst Storey had dropped back after losing the tow. Fox won the battle for 8th from Hollis and Jaques, as Smith came home in 11th, ahead of Rundle and Davies.                                                                                                                       .
