Title: Helmet Cameras - Beware!!
Post by: Trevor Williams on January 05, 2020, 13:36:45
Afternoon!
Please consider this as a polite "heads up" regarding the use of helmet mounted cameras in motorsport.

There are ever-increasing numbers of videos being posted on various social media channels showing on-track action of circuit action. If these are produced while taking part in a track day, no problem. If they are produced while taking part in a Motorsport UK permitted event, and you are caught using a helmet mounted camera, you will be subject to the penalties available to the organisers.

I am not just talking about "go-pros" etc stuck to your lid (or attached any other way), but also products like the Cambox V3.

The regulations are very clear (both UK and FiA), that UNLESS the camera (or other accessory) is approved by the helmet manufacturer and the current helmet standard, then THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED. The FiA are clear that if an unapproved accessory is fitted, the relevant homologation of the helmet is voided.

At this time, there are only TWO motorsport helmets that are approved by the manufacurers and the FiA for use with helmet cameras. Both of these helmets cost north of 3,200.00, and are from ONE manufacturer. They are also only approved using that manufacturers integrated helmet camera. The Cambox kit IS NOT approved......

What could happen if you use a helmet mounted camera in a UK race event? If it was discovered at scrutineering, the minimum would be the scrutineering tag being removed from your helmet, with the possibility that your helmet would be impounded for the duration of the meeting. If it was discovered after scrutineering and after you have taken part in on track activity? The removal of the scrutineering tag and impounding of the helmet as above, plus anything from a verbal warning to disqualification from the event (or any combination of the penalties available to the officials)
