I'm writing this after the AGM.
I agonised over this cam issue. Changing from something that has existed since the dawn of time and with which we've had 10+ years racing experience is a big step. On the face of it Phil's free cam is a reasonable suggestion. It would get rid that "he's got a bent cam" thinking but there would be a steep learning curve for all and a ascent some cannot make. The standard cam truly is variable and long nights in the garage measuring the variability of peak lift timing event if the profile is reasonably accurate.
Ideally we would not need a new cam but we cannot continue to have doubt, an unpolicable condition and damaging paddock whispers. Yes there are risks (lobe wear and knock of effects on other components)but we must manage these and move on. Terry has done a significant amount of work on this new profile. It is conservative to avoid undue risk to engines but testing suggests an improvement in performance.
